Advanced Certificate in Hairdressing (RPL)

Overview

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) allows learning that has taken place in all areas of life to be formally validated. In other words, previous life experience can lead to a formal qualification on the national framework of qualifications (NFQ) RPL gives value to all previous relevant learning no matter where or how this learning has occurred. This process offers hairdressers working within the industry the opportunity to achieve their QQI level 6 Advanced Certificate in Hairdressing.

COURSE OUTLINE

RPL Assessment briefs, which the applicant will be required to complete are as follows:

Health, Safety & Well Being
Reflection for Future Planning
Career Path Reflection
Theory and Science Briefs x 3 (one to accompany each practical Skills Demonstration)

Skills Demonstration

Highlights and Up-styling
Colour Change, Cut and Blow-dry
Perming and Neutralising

Minimum Entry Requirements

All RPL applicants must satisfy minimum entry requirements to participate in the RPL process for certification of the major award. These are:

Be currently employed or self-employed within the hairdressing industry for a minimum of five years at senior stylist level (in industry terms, 5 years post qualification experience)

OR

If not currently employed or self-employed within the hairdressing industry, the applicant must have been working in industry, at senior stylist level, within the previous five years. In other words, the applicant cannot be out of the industry for more than five years.

All applicants participating in this RPL process for who English is not their first language, must demonstrate achievement at CEFRB2 language level in accordance with Cork Education and Training board policy.

Bridging Course (if required)

There may be a need for three bridging courses for RPL applicants. Although not compulsory, it is highly recommended that all applicants attend them. These courses are non-credited and are designed to support RPL applicants to achieve their full potential.

These include:

  • Information Technology Skills for Hairdressing which includes Moodle, File Management, word processing, Spreadsheets, Digital Marketing, Internet and Email.
  • Perming and Neutralising – Theory of perming and neutralising, Practical Perming and Neutralising skills.
  • Diverse Hair types/groups.
