Student Testimonials

I chose the Applied Computer Training Course because it was not only a business and computers course, but it provided work experience as well as having links to the course I wanted to progress onto once I had completed it. Having failed my Leaving Certificate, I was honestly feeling a little hopeless as my dreams of pursuing college were essentially crushed. I heard from a friend about Douglas Street Campus and began to do some research and came across this course. I was very intrigued by the fact that the course offered computer training in relation to business as I was well versed in the casual use of technology but felt that my formal computer skills were greatly lacking.

The knowledge in the different software that I learned while studying in the course is something that I use in my current studies also and has saved me many headaches. My experience at Douglas Street Campus has also allowed me to adapt to a college environment making my transition to UCC seamless and easy, as I was able to become accustomed to meeting new people and the expectations required for a college environment. Even though the Applied Computer Training Course does not relate to the course I am currently studying, I still use a variety of skills that I learned when tackling tasks and I feel that the knowledge I gained is invaluable which I will carry with me for the rest of my life. The work, interview and CV experience I gained from the course helped me greatly when I was searching for a job after graduating.

Douglas Street Campus is welcoming and accommodating. Being an easily stressed individual, I managed to overcome the year with little stress thanks to the helpful personalities of the lecturers. I was never worried about asking a question and never felt left behind. I feel that I have matured quite a lot. I was able to work a lot on my anxiety by being put in a controlled college environment and it allowed me to learn how to manage myself and my time prior to attending university. I also met some good friends that I still keep in contact with.

Having completed the course and graduating, I was able to figure out what areas in employment I would enjoy working in and what areas I wouldn’t, which has allowed me to narrow my options down to something more manageable. I feel that everyone should have an elementary grasp of not only business but software, especially in this Digital Age. This course is a perfect way to learn these skills without feeling overwhelmed. The benefits of graduating are numerous, such as pursuing education, work opportunities, entry routes into higher education courses through the Higher Education Links Scheme without the stress of repeating your Leaving Certificate etc. all of which heavily outweigh the non-existent cons. I am so glad that I chose to do the Applied Computer Training Course in Douglas Street Campus.

My name is Hope Musa-Agboneni and I graduated with a Major Award in the ‘Applied Computer Training Course’ in Douglas Street Campus. I have always had a passion to have a career in Information Technology and the Applied Computer Training Course was a fantastic stepping stone into the field.

As a partial requirement for the course, I completed a 60 hour work placement, and it helped me interact more and gain abilities from the real working world. I found myself looking forward to the classes and my teachers were of tremendous help especially the Course Co-ordinator, Suzanne Hanley. The course broadened my expectations and gave me a whole new experience in the academic field.

Despite the Covid-19 restrictions, classroom learning was always wonderful and truly enlightening. During my course, I made friends and connected with them and am still in contact with them today. I am currently a proud student at University College Cork studying ‘Digital Humanities and Information Technology’.

Douglas Street Campus is an amazing college. The environment is very conducive to learning and the staff are efficient as they are thoughtful. The college excels in further education, and you will succeed whilst studying there. I would gladly and proudly recommend Douglas Street Campus to anyone interested in the College experience.

Hi my name is James Creedon and this is my end of the year testimonial. I studied Engineering Technology in the newly name Douglas Street Campus.

I choose this course because my passion is to be a mechanical engineer. Every member of staff was helpful and supportive from our course Co-Ordinator Catherine Cashin,  John O’ Herlihy  and Niall Kelleher.

I also got offered an apprenticeship as a metal Fabricator which was great but my passion is to be mechanical engineer but this goes to show that there are so many options in the engineering sector. There is no one way to get what you want, there are many different ways there

I thoroughly enjoyed every part of the course and I would not change a thing. I made some great friends that I can trust. I really enjoyed all of the different modules all were very enjoyable and always plenty to be done.

I am really thankful to everyone at Douglas Street Campus. Especially to the lecturers Catherine Cashin, John O’ Herlihy, Niall Kelleher, Sabah Ziad, Verona Noonan and Mairin Ni Dhunggain.

I hope you enjoyed my End Of Year Studet Testimonial.  Thank you again everyone. Couldn’t recommend this college and course enough to those who want to get a taste for what engineering is in college.

From my own perspective, the word college to me has always been an irrational fear, it’s the proof of hard work leading to a grown up. I was fearful going into college, scared of the class, what kind of teachers and how the system worked, as well as the work involved and none of those fears surfaced after I started. The college was well layered and no problems getting used to navigation. The staff, teachers, lecturers, council and guidance councillors were all amazing. I have never met a more relaxed and soothing bundle of staff in the time I spent there. Each teacher was so enthusiastic about their course you couldn’t not be interested. They each had a passion to teach as well as watch student learn, helping in any way they can, no matter the struggle of the students work. They wish all the best for their students by any means, helping with deadlines, catching up on work, extra curricular activities and much more. They are so forgiving I almost forgot I was in college, I saw it as a day by day of fun work. All my fears were blown away by the first month of college, and I thoroughly enjoyed each and every day I spent there, and it was all completely thanks to the staff at St. John’s College!

I thoroughly enjoyed my year studying in the Soundtracks and Sound Design Level 5 Course.
I entered this course with the intention of advancing my interest in composing music for
film. While this is a key aspect of this course, the exposure to various music technology
areas and the immersion in its possibilities for composition and sound design creation
proved fascinating and inspirational. All modules were taught with an encouraging
collaborative and creative approach in which it seemed as if we were constantly creating
while adapting our developing skills into our musical and sound-design compositions. I have
chosen to further my interest in sound production for film by progressing to the Level 6
Advanced Film, TV and Video Production Course where again I have been greeted by
encouraging teachers and classmates in a uniquely creative environment.
